2027 Champions League Final Relocated from Milan Due to San Siro Uncertainty, UEFA Confirms
The 2027 UEFA Men’s Champions League final will no longer take place in Milan, as initially anticipated, due to uncertainties surrounding the future of the iconic San Siro stadium, European football’s governing body, UEFA, confirmed on Tuesday.
In an official statement, UEFA cited the inability of Milan’s local government to guarantee that refurbishment works at the San Siro and its surrounding areas wouldn’t affect the hosting of the prestigious final.
“As the Municipality of Milano could not guarantee that the San Siro stadium and its surroundings would not be affected by refurbishment works in the period of the 2027 UEFA Champions League final, it was decided not to assign the final to Milan,” UEFA said.
This development marks a significant shift, as the San Siro, which has a storied history in European football, was seen as a prime candidate to host the 2027 final. The stadium has been the backdrop for many historic football moments, including past Champions League finals. However, ongoing discussions about whether to renovate or demolish the stadium have created too much uncertainty for UEFA to proceed.
With Milan now out of the running, UEFA has reopened the bidding process to find a new host for the 2027 final. The decision on the new venue is expected to be made by May or June 2025, giving interested cities ample time to submit their proposals.
For the 2026 Champions League final, Budapest has already been confirmed as the host city. Milan and Budapest were originally the only two candidates vying for the rights to host the 2026 and 2027 finals. However, with Milan’s bid now withdrawn, attention will turn to which new cities step forward to host one of the most prestigious events in club football.
